O for Orange

Note: This post is part of my third Facebook blogging challenge. I seek to post a 100-150 word narration – with alphabetized titles – in September. While I have penned several essays with more than 2000 words, crafting these stories is going to be my toughest ‘creative’ challenge yet because brevity is not my forte. This post – with a title that starts with O – has 150 words, minus this Note section and the bolded section in the end.

Two years ago, I took my niece, nephew and parents for lunch at my favorite Indian restaurant. As the rest of us scanned the menus, my 8-year-old niece calmly walked in with a plate of sliced oranges – her favorite fruit – from the buffet bar.

Now, we were ordering a la carte and, hence, were not supposed to consume the buffet dishes. My highly ethical (and embarrassed!) nephew – who was ten, but going on fifty (!) –admonished her for ‘stealing’ the oranges. But this diva ignored him, picked up each succulent slice and started gnawing contentedly.

The rest of us burst out laughing! Even our server smiled and invited this impish munchkin to take more. Shocked, my solemn nephew muttered something about ‘spoiled second children’.

Can’t blame him, eh?! ;)

Anyway, my niece’s ardent admiration for oranges is primarily why these fruits will always have a special place in my heart.

Indeed, my ‘little thief’ has good taste! ;) Oranges are healthy and delicious, but bananas and grapes are my favorite fruits! What is your favorite fruit (or fruits), friends? Thanks for engaging with me!
